I do a similar thing. Also for the birthday. But I usually wait until the date is about a month out. Post-occasion purchases to get what no one got me are a recuperative joy.

Have a look at the shot choices of Mad Max Fury Road. The complex visual storytelling from multiple POVs and angles, yet maintains solid clarity. Esp around the big truck sequences.
