Honestly yes, it sounds like it. I don't blame you though because TTRPGs have just thrown this (and other things) at people without enough explanation for like 40 years. Some people figured it out but MANY didn't.

Music and looking at other people's art but especially music.

This is why I try to hammer into my fellow artists to LIST YOUR RATES. List the damn prices, not just "ask me lol."
Commission sheets let people start decision making.

I ignore it. The people who support you were already doing so and will continue to do so.
Glaze/Nightshade doesn't work "outside the lab."

Yeah a good GM can make a poorly designed game fun, but if you only have poorly designed games it's going to be a lot harder to produce good GMs.

Yeah, if he was good at magic he'd be able to do some shapeshifting just like in the myths gottem.

One of my players once played a catgirl who could cast gun arts magic with Dexterity. She had to move to cast it, hence dexterity actually mattering. if she was restrained, she couldn't cast.
She was the deadliest party member by far, and the party included a 10 meter tall giant.
(It wasn't D&D tho)

I care so much about this because that group of uni students, I got that group at the start of 2018. Rather quickly I noticed they had some odd behaviours I hadn't seen in any players before. I wondered why since it affected how I could run the game.
I eventually realised it was their 5e experience.

One guy was so glad to be playing something else but it took him over a year, and some lengthy discussions for him to get out of the 5e "combat is a DPS contest" mindset. Over a year while actively trying to not be 5e-brained!

My experience is the 5e players willing to find something else are the exception, not the rule. I usually look for players who are expressing dissatisfaction with core aspects of the game.

I have found some but even when they try other systems they struggle to escape the mindset of 5e.

I had a group of uni students until they moved away after graduating. I wanted a new group in 2022 and looked around saying "I want to run this system because it does XYZ really well."
The response I got to my face was "There's no point learning another system, the GM can make it up for 5e".

You are a rare exception, and I'm glad to hear it.

5e is its own bubble, it's not part of the wider hobby, and that's the problem I have with it. Anyone who has learned 5e has a harder time learning anything else.
5e the system deserves to be dunked on.

Yeah, one day we'll get some new GM advice books that don't treat RPGs like storytelling with extra steps. At this rate I'll be writing it.

I like to play good games so people can be bad DMs.

I've had people tell me to my face when dice rolls start, roleplay stops.

If I was in a project like this a critical component would be avoiding over-gamification.
In short, the system should be able to adequately "describe" relevant entities and concepts (such as a character, and actions) without needing builds.
Basically: RPG, not MTG.

I don't do this and I encourage people to actually run RAW first!
December 20, 2024 at 11:35 PM
This subset is the majority now thanks to modern Rule 0 and the like. I am against it.
The tinkering isn't the problem it's the fact it's immediate. It's the naivety. There are many people who have never run RAW, and never understand the intent behind a design, or any design. They run games wrong.

If the GM did do this properly and the player just isn't taking the game seriously... Well that's a player problem.
OR
It could be the player is bored because he expects this. He expects the game to be violated and is basically shit testing the GMs. That player is likely used to bad GMs.
