I love collaboration, moreso on videos than mods but if you want to work with me just reach out!
Big fan of this take. This is my go-to, with the caveat that I miss having a library of lore-specific content

Holy cow CV! I thought flippantly about doing a hunger strike in DC but you're properly prepped!

I'm not even sure what to think but I sure hope it makes a difference.

The exciting part today is that anyone can look at the source code, and see human-readable names all through it, but still mod the way they always have, instead of dealing with additional licensing.

Unfortunately they released these mapping files under a new license, meant to restrict how modders were able to use it. So although we have had the real mappings for a while, people stayed committed to the manual mappings just to avoid that license.

In 2019 they took the first step toward full deobfuscation and released mapping files to translate the entire source code into its original names.

The minecraft game code is convoluted even when you have the names, so going through code that no one has bothered* to deobfuscate is a nightmare.

*I say this with so much gratitude to the saints who contributed 🤩

The problem is when you want to mod something outside the norm. Anything special, and you need to start digging through game code to figure out systems people don't usually mess with.

Notably, many mods will access the same code, like adding a new item, block, or recipe. So if just the code for those is deobfuscated manually, you already start to open doors.

The modding community has been successful at translating a lot of the code back by hand, and we get to keep a lot of that work across updates, but any code they rewrite will end up with new names.

Obfuscation is good for proprietary code, to make it harder for people to figure out how their game works. All it does is rename everything to nonsense names.

What about placing a light emitting block?

#mcdev for the Minecraft Mods and Modding feed

That seems like the only sensible/feasible way to do it. I agree there's no stackable items I would care about anyway.

Or perhaps is even limited to armor and tools

Lore-wise I'll grant that it's more interesting to have on armor and tools
September 30, 2025 at 6:05 PM
I love that! Does it only work with nonstackable items?

Once you figure out your strat to integrate them let us know 😂

Modrinth only accepts mods that can demonstrate why someone would want to use them and I gotta say it's harshing my vibe

For FactoryBlock ("what if duping were allowed"), I was fortunate to discover it was enjoyable and I told modrinth as much, but that was never part of the plan.
