I wrote a review of @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social 's new book, Everything is Tuberculosis, which I loved very much and which comes out on Tuesday.

the emails I get back from my congressmen are so condescending about how the government works as if they themselves do not understand the fundamental difference between the legislative and the executive branches nor the basic concept of checks and balances

Dear Writers,

You don’t have to submit your book for “pay to play” awards. No award is better than spending money you don’t have on an award the majority of readers and book buyers don’t know or care about. ❤️

I want particularly for libraries and educators to remember this. You can still have gay books in your classrooms. You can still have Black history month displays (and maybe also during months that aren't February). We've already seen such a chilling effect and the laws aren't even inked yet.
Today and in the coming days, remember

THE MESSAGE by Ta-Nehisi Coates 🎧 by author. To speak about this book feels foolish because the best words are in the book. Coates’ nuance, precision, and empathy is unmatched. Required reading for all Americans, all book lovers, and everyone grappling with complicity. READ IT.

Audiobooks are incredible for finally cracking into oldsy timsey classics! Books I’ve never been able to read because the language is dense and unfamiliar at first are so alive and relevant when read to me. 🥲

BE READY WHEN LUCK HAPPENS by Ina Garten. 🎧read by Ina. A case-study in Good Memoir Craft with plenty of personality and feel-good moments, if out of touch with the confluence of “luck” and Privilege.™️ READ IT. (Or don’t lol)

Aging is so underrated. Your peers are more interesting, and conversations richer. You're able to revisit books you first read twenty years ago. There is less jealousy, and God willing less pride. It's just a great time of life, aside from the thing that contains you (or is you) falling apart.

The Mistletoe Mystery by Nita Prose, read by Lauren Ambrose. 🎄🎅🏽 The tenor of this one is much cozier than the other MAID novels. A sweet Christmas romance. Very short. If you’re a big fan of Molly the Maid, you’ll like this like a cup of hot chocolate. ☕️ READ IT.
