This is a fantastic example of data visualisation being used in a manner that allows us to observe emergent properties over time and draw conclusions that individual data sets would not make immediately apparent.

Alabama, from mineral deposits through agriculture and slavery to modern voting.

Understanding how this sort of thing happens and why it matters is a basic test a lot of people are failing while they argue teaching history is unimportant
