Critics of the nomination said Sullivan's relationship to her son gave them pause, especially after Hudspeth nominated a resident who has challenged more than 100 books on Denton ISD shelves. Sullivan said she isn't carrying water for anyone in her application to the library board.

Sullivan said she applied for the board post. Mayor Gerard Hudspeth didn't approach her for the role. Sullivan also describes herself as an active library patron in every community she's lived in.
