I've been peacefully knitting this evening, and tuning into the rest of the world was a mistake.

The fiftieth anniversary of the Disaster was marked with a plaque, mounted above the steps where so many had died. For survivors, the plaque was too little, too late. An effort spearheaded by survivor Alf Morris led to the erection of a memorial, completed in 2017. A yearly memorial is held nearby.

Those immediately in the area knew only that it was a tremendous loss of life, as they described bodies being laid out like cord wood in the streets, churches and public buildings overflowing with corpses. Questions about the new battery at Victoria Park, shelter measures, and safety were paramount.

It housed considerably more than that, as some residents spent more time there than at home. The library, located directly above the shelter, set up a station inside. Locals moved a piano in, and sometimes danced until the early hours. Food was freely shared, and it became part of the community.

Libraries and museums, housing and churches, every effort was expended to lift the moral stain of poverty. A teaching hospital that required indigent patients to be the subject matter, weekly lectures on the immorality of low class joys like beer and birds, bulldozing neighborhoods for overcrowding.

To set the scene properly, Bethnal Green is in the East End of London. It was one of the more notoriously impoverished areas, with single incidents of crime that stood out in their depravity and also the callous pursuit of money, particularly the London Burkers and Judith Defour of Gin Lane fame.

25 years ago I would have told you that bagels are a vehicle for cream cheese delivery. Then I was forced to watch the bagel sandwich craze from the sidelines. Anyways, Trader Joe's GF bagels are not bad. Just don't ask me if they taste like bagels, it's been awhile.

Michelangelo was lowered into the Roman ruin where they found Laocoön and his sons to see the sculpture in 1506, so I'm pretty sure the cat is out of the bag on this one 🙄

Hypothetically, if you were wrapping these for a 15 year old who collects for the "creep factor", what would you do?

I use continental and combination knitting (and other things I learned about myself from YouTube videos 😂). I find that it makes my ribbing neater. I do also like twisted rib, for when I just cannot get my tension right.
