I think it’s a combination of LGBT progress being attendant to an overall pro bodily autonomy sentiment in society, plus a lot of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans coming home with lots of tats. But that’s speculative.

It used to be basically impossible to be gainfully employed if you were in any way gender nonconforming or had any visible tattoos.

Wife and I just watched Judgment at Nuremberg (bc we saw the new Nuremberg movie which is not nearly as good), and Shapiro is like the codefendants who aren’t Burt Lancaster… if they were lesser men they could pretend they didn’t know better, but precisely because they’re not idiots they are damned
