Could you have a more welcoming entrance to a village than The Blue Bell Inn ahead and the Racehorses Hotel on the left in the village of Kettlewell.

The hills in the background with some snow. An inn on the left, cottages and an inn straight ahead. The road leads over a bridge where Kettlewell beck runs and joins the river Wharfe. It is a winter’s evening and the lights on the inns provide a welcoming sight as does the plume of smoke indicating a log or coal fire.

This year I enjoyed experimenting with water soluble colour wax pastels. Here is a picture of Crocuses I completed in May 2025.

This effect is achieved by drawing with the wax pastels, spraying with water, letting it dry then drawing again over the smudgy background.

London is so vibrant before Christmas especially in Covent Garden where the lights are usually stunning. It’s near the theatres and a great place for a pre-theatre meal. The lights are hanging from the roof of the old Covent Garden Market and are reflected on the wet ground. It is crowded because of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants. In addition there are usually a number of street performers drawing a crowd. Covent Garden was originally a flower, fruit and vegetable market.

It was a very cold day. The tufts of grass on the bank in the foreground are covered in frost as is most of the growth around the pond. The pond is reflecting the beautiful blue of the sky and the surrounding conifers.The surface of the pond is cracked ice. The sun is illuminating the tops of the trees in the distance which is creating a sheen on the pond of these reflected trees.

I first started to learn to paint in watercolours a few years ago. I was fascinated by the different techniques you could use and tried a few in this painting of Holly and Berries.

I wanted a blurred green background and used the salt method to granulate the paint. The frost on the leaves was achieved with masking fluid. I removed the paint for the leaf veins by using a thin wet brush and stroking off the paint.

A dark overcast sky and poplars in the distance. There were loads of these seed heads at the edge of the field. I shall definitely come again and take a photo when they are frost covered but I don’t want to wish for cold weather. It’s very mild at the moment.
