As if I haven't already been jerked around by doctors enough when the first rheumatologist I saw refused to diagnose my obvious psoraitic arthritis and suffered utterly debilitating chronic pain that destroyed my life for ~3-4 years until I self advocated enough to get diagnosed by a second Dr. 🙃

Totally. The purpose is to try and signal a certain social status, it has almost nothing to do with any sense of fashion per se. It's precisely tacky and gauche. It's like people buying limited editions of things just to flex that they got offered the chance to buy them when most people wouldn't.

Ah, how I love dealing with doctors. I don't know why it has to be an uphill battle to badger health care professionals into actually giving you healthcare, but apparently we have an adversarial medical system 🤷♀️

I'm so sorry you have to deal with that. One of my other friends struggles with IBS and it's heartbreaking to see what it's done to someone who used to be a big foodie. Now her eating is all focused around trying to avoid symptom flares.

The internet has amped up the risk and scale of social contagion with conspiracy theories, but they had no trouble spreading like wildfire in Evangelical communities in the 80s and 90s, either. E.g. Satanic Panics, etc.

Tiffany's isn't really targeted at the wealthy but rather the aspirational upper middle class who think of the "Tiffany" brand as having status signaling cachet. The terrible value and ugly design are, bizarrely, part of the appeal as a result.

David Draiman trained as a Cantor when he was young and it gave him a very good foundation for his metal singing. He knows how to do all that distorted singing in a way where it doesn't tire out his voice at all.

Funny enough, even though I tend to present fairly femme and enjoy getting pretty dolled up regularly, I've never wanted to shave my armpits. For some reason my internal compass of my own femmeness has always included armpit hair. I have an oddly strong opinion about it for myself, too. 🤷♀️

When I went back to York a few years later for a post-graduate certificate I had every single interaction I had with York admin documented in writing just to protect myself from getting York'd a second time.

Anyway, I don't really have any conclusions here, I just wanted to think out loud for a bit about how awkward it can be to navigate the intersection of one's personal needs and preferences and social norms that strongly incentivize some things and penalize others. (END)
