If it can't be rescued for its original purpose, perhaps you could cut off the embroidered section and stitch it to the back yoke of a shirt--white or otherwise.

I need to learn it, too, but all the instructions I've seen are for 1x1 or 2x2 ribbing. I have 1x3 rib on my socks.
