According to linguists on Reddit it is both and depends on accent or something.

I like how someone put it: if you sing “you are my sunshine”, does it fit better in the “you” placement or the sunshine placement. For me it’s definitely the sunshine placement.

By the rules of syllables it should be two. According to this poster, rule 1, 4, and 5 both confirm two syllables.

I have a nephew named Charles the same age as my youngest, and I always loved how somehow my son as a toddler would emphasize the “L” without even knowing how it was spelled. “Char-lez” is how my son pronounced the name.
