Anyone I ask says integrity is an important trait, behavior, characteristic, etc.. Yet I have observed numerous people who hesitate to hold themselves or others accountable for integrity violations — or, more disturbing, trust & support those who objectively lack it.

That said, I have long held to the absolute that if people cannot trust each other, they are worthless to each other. Leaders must establish, preserve, & strengthen. (1/7)

Tact is important, but absent candor, tact can be little more than bootlicking, sucking up, or sycophancy.
Likewise, candor without tact can be little more than bullying.
Balanced with candor, tact can be a powerful communication and leadership tool.

This is the episode where I start out talking about tact, then go off (tactfully?) on a tangent about the importance of living our leadership traits & not following or supporting a leader who doesn’t live them.
Also, I’m not at all sure what’s going on with that cowlick at 1:58.

The ability to make effective decisions is perhaps one of the greatest burdens of leadership.
You don’t need to make the right decision every time, but you do have to make timely decisions consistent with your values & in the best interests of those you serve.

Fostering initiative will help you get the most out of a team.
The power of a team is that any two members are probably smarter, stronger, faster, & more creative than an individual leader. So don’t control them, unleash them!

Taking a side trip off the JJ DID TOE BUCKLE path to talk about trust.
Trust is the confidence someone will act in your best interest.
It cannot be mandated. It must be given freely & still belongs to the giver when given.
Don’t give the gift of trust recklessly or reflexively.

Dependability is the certainty that a person will do their job properly.
If you believe this is important, you can practice being dependable — and objectively determine of others are.
If they are dependable, cool. If they’re not, well, don’t treat them as if they are.

On a side note, in keeping with the “No one is perfect” cornerstone of my personal leadership philosophy, “…DID TIE…” didn’t make it through caption edits.
Judge me for that as you will. :)

Once you define the leadership traits that are important to you, you can use them to guide you as a leader — and to evaluate yourself and other leaders.

This is just one of many leadership trait models you can use in your own development as a leader.
You can also use leadership traits you value to objectively evaluate other leaders.
(Let’s see if the leader I use as an example without naming them gets wind of this…)

The I in TIE stands for Integrity. If we define it & decide it is important to us, we can live it — and we can apply it as a standard for others.

We are all leaders in our own way, so let’s practice leadership as a lifestyle.
Develop your own leadership philosophy that guides you day to day and as a standard for use in evaluating other leaders to hold them accountable.
