Discworld QOTD, from Feet of Clay
No more kings. Vimes had difficulty in articulating why this should be so, why the concept resonated in his very bones. After all, a good many of the patricians had been as bad as any king. But they were...sort of...bad on equal terms. What set Vimes's teeth on edge was the idea that kings were a different kind of human being. A higher lifeform. Somehow magical.

easiest way to nerd snipe me, apparently, is to go "hey what if vimes was in this situation" at which point i just start writing discworld fanfiction off the cuff

On today's docket: what if lord of the rings but discworld?
Vimes would take the ring, then turn to Detritus and say "Detritus. Listen to me. I'm not being funny. If I, for any reason, look like I'm about to put this on my finger, I need you to stop me." Vimes gave him the kind of smile divers will sometimes see in their dreams, big and full of teeth and without even the slightest hint of a sense of humor. "Yes," he said. "Those ones." The tower fell. There wasn't much funny about it. There often isn't when a thousand tonnes of stone held together with nothing but hate comes tumbling down. The light of the dark lord shattered before the last brick had hit the ground. But he was not, not yet, destroyed. Diminished, yes, but he had been diminished before. He had come back from worse. A scythe. A farmer's tool. It was no weapon any capable warrior would wield. And yet, at the foot of awakened Mount Doom, his army defeated, the dark lord Sauron laid his eye on the curved blade and for the first time in an age, he feared. "There are heights even someone like you can aspire to, grey rider." "THE LORD OF THE RINGS," Death continued, smiling at the rising sun over the mountains, like he couldn't hear the voice that scratched at the mind. "I DON'T SEE THE POINT OF EITHER. RULING. RINGS. ONLY THE WORK MATTERS. IT'S ALL THAT MATTERS, IN THE END." "Nothing ends." "SOME THINGS DO," Death said. "THIS DOES." He raised his arm, and swung. Once. One swing to end it all, in the land of Mordor, where the shadows lie. "YOU DO."
