„Researchers documented an enormous uptick in RNA editing when cuttlefish, octopus and squid acclimated to cold water. Because editing changes RNA only temporarily, the researchers suspected these animals use it to acclimate to their environment.“

"The data presented in this paper definitely suggests that cephalopods have among the oldest sex chromosomes in both animals and plants," independent evolutionary scientist, Sarah Carey, told Carissa Wong at Nature.

Cranchiids are wonderful.

From the massive colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni), to the surprisingly long Galiteuthis phyllura (Up to 2.7 m in mantle length!), to the depressed looking Taonius borealis to the very silly Cranchia scabra...

In 2019, scientists wanted to test if cuttlefish had stereo vision. So they did what any reasonable person would do:

They velcro'd 3D glasses to European common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) and set up a 3D theatre.

The results? They look very cool

Scientists at UC San Diego wanted to study how squids were able to survive in tropical regions and near-arctic regions with waters just above freezing. They found squids do this by constantly editing their genes to allow them to adapt. 🧬🦑
