![I have noticed a lot of songs that follow the patterns and structures of classical music, yet were written in modern times. To express my observations, I refer to such music as “neo-classical”. A good way to explain this is to compare certain modern works to the description given at the beginning of “Fantasia”: "Now there are three kinds of music on this "Fantasia" program. First, there's the kind that tells a definite story. Then there's the kind that, while it has no specific plot, does paint a series of more or less definite pictures. And then there's a third kind, music that exists simply for its own sake. [...] what we call 'absolute music.'" The first kind of music, that which tells a story, was originally found in operas and ballets, but can now be heard in the modern movie sound track and score. The works of John Williams and Danny Elfman, for example. Then you have the music without a plot, but that still paints a picture in your mind. In this case, I point to things like Gershon Kingsley's “Pop Corn” (made famous by Hot Butter) or Aaron Copland's “Hoedown” (“Beef: it's what's for dinner”). The first lives up to its name as it just brings to mind an image of popping corn, while the second always makes me think of water color desert landscapes found in Arizona hotel rooms. Then you have absolute music, for which a good example is the collected works of Ray Lynch. None of his songs tell a story, and most don't even paint a picture (with the exception of “The Oh Of Pleasure” which to me always sounded like bubbles and whale song). It just is. It shows his training in classical music, yet is completely new too. Most people categorize it as “new age”, but I have never felt that truly captures the essence of it.
