It’s not quick. You need patience for any government process here. But you’re smart to have started while still in the US, it’s easier to gather the necessary documents there. Good luck!

Tip #5 - Switch from physical mail delivery to a virtual mail service such as Traveling Mailbox (our choice — there are others). Anything sent through the US Postal Service will come to you digitally & you’ll find that 99.9% of it can be dealt with online. Bonus: No more paper junk mail!

Tip #4 - Go paperless with all your bank & consumer accounts. Get comfortable with internet banking. Get familiar with how to make an international wire transfer. Change banks if yours doesn’t allow you to make wire transfers online or charges large fees for them.

Tip #3 — Digitize everything. Photos, documents, memorabilia, recipes. Organize & store everything on the cloud server of your choice
(Dropbox, iCloud,
Google, etc.). Yes, it will seem like an overwhelming task. Do it a bit at a time.

Tip #2 - Downsize your possessions. Be ruthless.
Especially if you’re older,
you know you need to do this anyhow. Read The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning. Also Goodbye, Things
By Fumio Sasaki — it will change how you think about “stuff”.
