I did wonder when I saw it whether it could possibly be true, because I was living in Clermiston in 1978 and I don't remember it being mentioned. It does rather sound like the sort of thing that would have caused comment at the time.

The Ashton Memorial is worth the hike up the hill, especially for the views if it’s a clear day.
