I feel like this is why shrek works. It doesn't hate, nor is cynical of fairy tales. It just dislikes the idea that, only traditionally pretty, people who conform to society get fairy tales. Shrek is dirty, gross, and crude, but he deserves happiness and a fairy tale, a happily ever after, as well.
