my heart hurts for the 13 y o who just wants to stretch their writing muscles w a joel miller spicy fic, yknow?

coming back swinging! something I’m finding is that good writing is coming in the midst of the action the writing, not before it. the act of putting words to paper is encouraging the best ideas to come about. I got lost in the word count after a while! hoping to keep this going the rest of the week

- fleshing out scene descriptors: items they have to move to do the deed, the light/lack of light, the types of blankets, etc
- focusing on emotionally and mentally what’s going on in the protagonists head vs what is happening to their bodies

If anyone in romance has tips, I’m open! #romanceauthors

here are some of the techniques I’m trying to push through these obstacles:

- mapping out full character profiles: how they react to certain touches and sounds and why
- talking to trusted friends about their experiences and hopes when it comes to physical intimacy #writers #authors

- never having experienced the pinnacle of this activity myself
- limiting stereotypes about the sexuality of Latino characters
- avoiding a purely clinical description of the scene, making sure that it’s not “this happened, then this happened” #writingtips

Idk if it’s repetitively chopping herbs or stirring the pot, but something always comes to me when I’m meal prepping or making lunch on a WFH day. I gotta be careful though because if I take my eye off the stove to jot down an idea, I could burn my home down.

I’m excited and nervous because I’m not exactly known for my consistency, but I believe it’s never too late to cement new habits. Here’s to pulling at the thread of the novel in my head 🧡📙🧶

Ultimately, I want to mold something for myself, not for work or a paycheck (I expend a lot of creative energy in my 9-5 which I love). I’m not under the delusion that this will be good on the first try - I know it’s gonna be dogshit on a page at first - but the goal is to GET IT DOWN.

I’m not trying to write tragedy porn. There are already plenty of Pulitzer-worthy stories about suffering in Latino history, but that’s not the story I want to tell. I want to capture the hard-won beauty, resilience, & fun that runs through us like an inheritance - because that’s exactly what it is.
