Into old electronics, games and making maple syrup.
Finally assembled the 19V2000/G05-802 hybrid vector monitor and powered it up. Did a staged power up, first the deflection board alone, then with the HV cage, and then finally with the VSTCM vector generator. Tonight I'll try getting it running with MAME.

Finished the wiring harness

Gotta check the frame transistors and the wiring from the deflection to HV board to make sure no adaptions need to be made, but might actually fire up the 19" v2000/G05 vector monitor this weekend.

Built the VSTCM seeing activity on each axis on my scope (x-y mode seems broken)

Also replaced the old hardened anode cup with a similarly sized donor from a newer color TV

Collected all the parts to build a 19" V2000 with a NOS picture tube & just put in my order to have VSTCM PCBs printed.

VSTCM is an open source piece of a hardware that allows a computer connected via USB to generate the XYZ signals for a vector monitor.

Started a new monitor project. Last year I bought a V2000 b&w vector monitor tube and frame, and due to some eBay luck I'm starting to collect the pieces to rebuild it.

Got a rebuilt deflection board coming, working on getting the HV cage, and found a NOS CRT.

Worked on a 27" dual res Sharp Image monitor. Initially I only got retrace lines and no image, but with enough fiddling I did get the faintest image. One of the resistors in the black level section was open. Decent image besides the top waviness. Gonna cap it next week

I might revisit the G07 with the linearity problems on the donor tube+yoke. The linearity coil is in parallel with a 390ohm resistor. If I raise the resistor value I think more current will go though the coil and slow down the start of the scan.

Fully reassembled the K4600 with it's new tube. I really couldn't be happier with how this turned out.

Gave up on fitting the k4600 yoke to a new tube and went back to the TV that had a similar yoke but with bowing and tried a trick of putting a magnet on the pincushion transformer. Straighten right out! And I used a convergence strip to fix a corner

Decided to swap the original K4600 yoke onto a new tube. Space heater warms the yokes enough to break free. Always keep the purity rings with the tube so you don't have to set up purity and convergence again. Right corners might need purity magnets.

Swapped the K4600 to a donor TV with a closely matching yoke. Looks like the old tube is just tired
Not sure if I'll do a yoke swap, geometry is passable I think for anything without scrolling.

Reassembled the k4600 I was working on. First picture makes it look okay, but once you turn on the lights it's dim af. I feel this is likely just a weak old tube and the chassis is fine. Gonna need to find someone to use a rejuvenator on it, or else do a tube swap.

If I got a nickel for everytime they made an anime based off a turn of the century Canadian coming of age novel I'd only have two nickels, but it's still strange it's happened twice.

Made about a gallon of maple syrup between two batches. The quick transition from a cold February to a warm March is horrible though, don't think I'll make any more then this.

Finished recapping the 4600. Biggest annoyance was the filter capacitor, 4 legs, 2 twisted to lock it on. Ended up cutting the legs off. I can understand why the previous owner just zip tied a 2nd one on and hard wired it.

New filter cap is so much smaller.

Got the capkit and other parts for the K4600.

Did all the caps on the daughter boards, reflowed all the header pins, and replaced the weird black level pot. Previous owners did a partial cap kit, but there were still a few of the original 45 year old ones (gray)

This things feels like a health hazard. You can tell it lived through the 80s.

Still, it's cleaning up nicely. Major pain to disassemble because of how modular this chassis it. It was apparently an adaption of an existing consumer television board.

Waiting on parts

While waiting for parts I started cleaning up the k4600, starting with some of its daughter cards.

Just some sprays of simple green, lathering with a brush and rinsing. Got them drying in front of a space heater.

Picked up a WG K4600 for $50. Supposedly works and only need a cap kit and color adjustment.

Odd design. Instead of everything on one board they got these daughter cards and just bolted the flyback and width coil to the frame.

Supposedly pretty bullet proof though. Needs a cleaning

Onboard GPU didn't work out, never got a 15khz image. Reused the R700 based GPU without issue. Nice benefit of it is I flashed the bios so it outputs a 15khz signal even during bootup.

If I ever need to go into the BIOS I will need to disconnect it though and use the onboard video.

Building a new PC for my upright MAME cabinet.

As accuracy in MAME increases, so do the hardware requirements. I'll be testing this motherboards VGA to see if it can generate the correct signals with the Ryzen 2200G APU, but if it doesn't I've got the old GPU ready.

Installed a mod I heard about last month on my 25" K7000. It's a factory mod that often gets removed due to it looking sketch

It's simply a .0062 1.6kv cap placed in parallel with D18. It corrects the barrel distortion which this monitor has had that bugged me.

Looks perfect to me.

Think I've reached the limit for this TVs yoke as there is no way to adjust the horizontal linearity coil on the G07. Essentially the horizontal circuit is running out of current near the end of the line.

Guess I'll be doing a yoke swap after all.

These had two monitors in an interesting configuration to create the illusion of one extra wide monitor. One monitor would be directly viewable by the players, the other was actually facing towards the ceiling and would be reflected at the players with a piece of glass. An example of Peppers ghost.
The 6-player X-Men arcade cabinet. Informally known as THE UNIT.

Started a mod for the G07 to replace the weird 3 pin and jumper wire horizontal and vertical position system with pots for fine grain control

Not sure I agree with the recommendation to solder the pot pins to the existing ones. Feels very janky and is awkward to do.
