I write humble SF stories of humble characters thrust into extraordinary situations, and grand epic tales of heroes at the horizon of wonder.
The 𝘠𝘦𝘢𝘳’𝘴 𝘉𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘍𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘍𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘝𝘰𝘭. 3 is out. I really appreciate the extended introduction, which gives an overview of key events of the year in the world of Canadian spec fiction and the universe generally. Shout out to @ourmankoto.bsky.social

The new issue of Analog includes my latest story, “One Step Away.” A bit of meteorology, a bit of AI, a bit of impostor syndrome, and a big dose of hope for our future.

Please tell me this device will include a mini tractor beam that can do chiropractic adjustments on my C1 and C2 vertebrae, and that it will be invented in 2025. I’ve got a wicked tension headache.

As a hobbyist woodworker, today I found myself wishing for more #sciencefiction that features woodworking. I need to reread The Lathe of Heaven. I briefly mused about writing a sequel. Based on my woodworking skills, it would be titled The Jack Plane with a Dull Blade of Heaven.

The fanzine Riverside Quarterly (1964-1993) has a place in my heart. Shortlisted for the Hugo 3 times. Mostly literary criticism, but also had poetry and fiction. Contributors included Algis Budrys, Philip José Farmer, Ursula Le Guin, and, in 1990, me with my first short story publication.

Science fiction you read/saw as a child that left an impression.

𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘙𝘶𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨. I was too young to see it in theaters in 1972, but a few years later it was broadcast on network TV. I cried when Bruce Dern's robot Louie died.

I’m now writing the one scene of my WIP that’s set in #Saskatchewan, trying to capture how its landscape shaped me. The fact that it’s set 14,000 years in the future doesn’t stop it from making me feel homesick.

I hired a new editor. His intuition and skill are amazing, but he’s kind of a whiny brat.

“I don't like the passive voice. It’s coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.”

I’ve hired a new editor.

“You all know me. You know how I earn a livin'. I'll edit this bird for ya, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad story! Not like goin' down to Congress and editing a political speech. This story has run-on sentences that’ll swallow you whole.”

In the intro to #WotF41, Jody Lynn Nye advises: write something “you know is missing from the literature.”
Not quite missing, but amidst a deluge of apocalypses, there’s not nearly enough stories that are honest about the shittiness of our world and yet still find an honest light of hope.

Technologies like the Atykthera Mechanism (~150 BCE) inspire speculation: what might humanity have achieved by now, if only…?

I fear that 2200 years from now, people will look back on our time and say, “Good God, we could have colonized Alpha Centauri by now.”

Seems we’re in the stupidest timeline

I'm proud to have another short story published in 𝘈𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘨!

“Interconnections and Porous Boundaries” explores impostor syndrome, human interconnectedness, and the awe-inspiring complexity of the natural ecosystems that sustain us.

I am seeing a disturbing level of click-baity social media posts, profiles, and paid advertisements purporting to be genuine news organizations. Among them are profiles on Facebook and Twitter/X pretending to be CBC.
