Whether you realize it or not substance use has long been a part of games. Dating back to the power pill in Pacman substance use has typically been used as a power up or stat boost. As time progressed the power ups such as taking benzodiazepine in Metal Gear have become more realistic but still leave a lot to be desired. Recently however there have been refreshing changes away from having a drink making the screen wobble and toward thoughtful depictions of substance use addiction and the stigma that is involved with both. The social workers psychologists researchers and educators on this panel will discuss depictions of substance use in games and the importance of reducing stigma.
