Forgot to post this last week. Finished Killing Commendatore. Really great work, and it’s right up there with my favorites of his. It’s probably the most ‘resolved’ of all of Murakami’s novels.

Still buzzing after the Dryhouse Ruins record release show last night. Great turnout, with great friends old and new. We’re so proud of this record. Thanks to all of you for the support, and for making this such a special night for us!

Forgot to post this: Two more Murakami books completed. Men Without Women has some great stories, one particular favorite is ‘Kino’. Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki is really good as well, but the resolution left me feeling wanting a bit more.

Finished my reread of 1Q84 a couple of days ago. Thoroughly enjoyed it the second time around. I do think book 3 drags a little bit at times, some of it because of Murakami’s attention to detail. Terrific book overall though.

Finished Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman. Great collection of Murakami’s short stories. Now I am about to start a rereading of his magnum opus, 1Q84.

Finished up a reread of after dark a couple of days ago. I forgot how much I enjoyed it the first time around. It’s a departure from the formula he typically used up to this point, where the story is told by a neutral third person observer.

This was the Milwaukee River this morning near Estabrook Park. 11.5 ft above normal. We got clobbered last night.

Finished Kafka on the Shore yesterday. Amazing book, right up there as one of Murakami’s masterpieces. I feel silly having waited this long to read it, but it’s one of those books that will stay with you for a long time. Up next is a re-read of After Dark.

Finished this a couple of days ago. Jay Rubin, one of Murakami’s translators, wrote this in 2002, and it covers his work up to Underground and Sputnik Sweetheart. Good insight into the nuances of the original Japanese and how he and Alfred Birnbaum approached the English versions.

I just remembered that my wife @sluggirl and I had inherited a couple of Hall and Oates records from her mom. Sure enough, we have the ‘Ritz’ cracker one.

We usually spend the 4th holed up in the north woods where any fireworks noise is far away. This is our first year spending it in the city in about seven years. And I can report that people are still fucking stupid when it comes to fireworks. Cash is really not having it right now.

Finished Murakami’s ‘After the Quake,’ a collection of his short stories, all with looming implications after the 1995 Kobe earthquake disaster. A couple of these stories have appeared again recently in the Murakami Manga Collection that was released recently.
