Just been in a meeting where someone said causally that they research space law.
No follow up. Just ‘space law’ and moved on.

I made the mistake of reading the Facebook posts from that composer who reckons he’s had to quit music because of DEI. It’s exhausting!!
It’s also something I’ve had men say to my face when I’ve had opportunities that they felt were owed to them.

See also ‘Is that band still going? I didn’t know they were still a thing?’
If you respond to someone else’s viewing enthusiasm with “people still watch that?” then you are being unkind. Boo.

Those are some comprehensive Beethoven facts! A guy who wrote excellent symphonies and could be a bit of an arse.
Today is Beethoven's baptism day, which means yesterday might have been his birthday, so I'm going to recreate the Beethoven birthday thread here

Feel free to mute this post if you don't care to see it all again

For the rest of us, let's celebrate my favorite musical weirdo

As part of our Organ+ Festival on Friday we have a concert of new works at Fyvie Hall. A really exciting programme featuring work from students and lecturers, across genres, blending the organ into contemporary popular music (I'm premiering a new installation).

Had the privilege to attend the ELIA biennial in Milan last week. It’s really got me thinking about how do we prove the value of the arts to an outside audience.

I don’t love the capitalist profit model, but in tough times we need to show our place in society in a tangible and accessible way.

This gatekeeping is why I don’t write for traditional concert settings. I can’t stand the idea that people will be policing behaviour for my music.
Now that I'm not an orchestra musician anymore, I'm finally free to say what we all know to be true, which is that 97% of the cultural gatekeeping at concert halls happens in the audience, and 97% of the actual musicians fucking hate those people.
I cannot stand the orchestra concertgoer that makes it a point to dramatically whip their head around in the direction of any slight disruption. Someone ducking in late, dropping a program, coughing — all things that last a couple seconds, tops. Calm down

Bluesky academics, let's get to know each other! Quote this & tell me: 1) a project you’re working on & 2) an idea/theory you aren't working on but keep thinking about.

1) immersive theatre production in an old concrete testing facility (also have a book launching)

2) making commutes sound better

1) Should a set of presentations about 90s aesthetics be a few articles or a book?

2) How do we teach gaming literacy?

I’ve just given a talk about vampires and the organ at Regent Street Cinema and my favourite thing from my research is… the picture we all think of as a vampire at the organ (or at least I did) is actually the phantom of the opera!!

I’m reviewing the proofs of my book today. Suddenly seems very real to have it typeset. It’s about aesthetics of interactive sound and music (game sound, installations, immersive theatre). Going to bring some interactive sound chats on here soon! (But first, coffee!) Any questions let me know!
