It gives a lot of freedom for sure. Starfield was my first NG experience and it opened up a whole bucket of new possibilities for RPing lol

I have done it as part of Sam's story when he was my main companion. But I haven't leaned into it yet either.
I also usually pick shows/movies to set the mood for the playthrough and watch them in between sessions for better immersion lol.

LOL my NG+ canon is that she loses her memory after passing through, and then gradually regains it along the way, so my UC story was a result of her trusting Sarah more than her previous self did, and instead of becoming a pirate captain, she joined the Vanguard (Va'ruun'kai pending lol)

I do this with stories that make me uncomfortable in some ways! Like an "evil" playthrough - if I'm ever forced to do it - would be the opposite of what I normally do, so I'll make a character who's specifically *not me* so I could instead disconnect and use them as a narrator, not a protagonist

In some cases for sure, but my way of connecting to a story is through a more or less self insert, and I would never write my own character as a parent, so instead I feel resentment. Like something was forced on me that I didn't choose lol. It's definitely preference tho, and I love F4 regardless

I'm in the blank slate camp for sure and I *hated* how F4 locks you into the parent role from the very start, but both cases allow you to RP pretty much anything, as long as the game provides a somewhat valid background to your story. I hate that people tie themselves in knots to hate on a game D:

Oh no I agree that gamers™ are prone to ignoring stuff lol. I just mean more like, imo, such messaging plays the same role as ominous music or captions in film - making sure that the gravity of the situation is well translated, regardless of how you're processing the story.

To be fair, a lot of such design stems from desire to boost accessibility. Any sort of disability that limits or even prevents access to otherwise clear/obvious mechanics or messages requires safeguarding. I.e. you can't simply get rid of ominous VO or captions if it's the one thing people rely on
