What happens when you can only use a single supplier? That doesn't carry options for your body? And you can't afford to buy supplies out of pocket? It's not a single ply vs aloe infused four ply kind of deal. It means you're using whatever tape you have to try and hold whatever pouches you can get to your skin, and suffering every day while what's leaking out under the tape eats away your skin, and you can't afford to change your pouch more often and you can't afford any other products. You are trapped in your house and your body. I'm not speaking in hypotheticals here, I have patients with Medicaid who are already living this reality, effectively debilitating them even further. What products they can use to manage how healthily they can poop and pee every day is not determined by a discussion between the patients and their health care team, it's determined by insurance. What about the patients who aren't on Medicare or Medicaid? Private insurance isn't limited like this, right? Well, historically, private payers will change their tune to follow CMS guidelines if it means saving money. And private insurance is about making money.
