I was inspired by an old postcard from the 1900's, combined with Sanrio-esque cuteness.

Aotearoa New Zealand is considered the birthplace of penguins. With the first true penguin, Waimanu manneringi, appearing around 61 million years ago.

A pair of plush keychains of the characters Petitmericco (left) and Kingyodohonpo (right). Petitmericco is a sheep Sanrio released in 2000. She's canonically born in New Zealand, so the ribbon hanger has the words 'aroha' and 'love' to reflect this. Kingyodohonpo is a goldfish released in 1987, she's based off of signage you'd find at old stores in Japan.

This was originally part of a writing exercise from Ursula K. Le Guin's book, 'Steering The Craft', where I had to write a narrative in one long sentence. A year later, and I still like how it came out.

Slightly Up, Slightly Down Slightly up, slightly down, the wind carried the Pouakai over the heavens, like the sea with the waka; the mountains coated in shades of bluish grey, like tidal waves threatening to swallow the flat land - the Pouakai was the monarch of the skies and the forest, it answered to no one but the Atua, and all but the Atua had every right to fear them - I can see it with my mind's eye, the Pouakai's legacy, as the plaster model hovered over the effigy of its prey, the Moa; the wires wobbling from the measured gust of the air conditioning - slightly up, slightly down.
