Last week, LA County’s Probation Chief publicly recognized the POC’s recommendations to strengthen visitation practices in juvenile facilities, an important step toward deeper family connection, greater consistency, and better outcomes for the young people in our care.

The Probation Oversight Commission recommends changes to who oversees college and vocational education for incarcerated youth.

On November 18th, the L.A. Board of Supervisors will consider the POC’s proposal for LACOE to provide quality higher education in Probation facilities.

Chief Viera Rosa reported to the POC that fewer field staff do not necessarily lead to higher recidivism. Research supports this view. Studies show that intensive supervision, with frequent meetings and drug tests, can actually complicate the lives of probationers and hinder rehabilitation.
