The reason migrant crossings of the US border are a tiny fraction of what they could be is almost entirely because Colombia (under both Petro and his predecessor) has taken the brunt, turning 3 million Venezuelan "illegals" into de facto citizens with health care and school so they don't go north
After announcing 25% tariffs on US imports, Petro says "We have never refused to take migrants and we have made efforts to stop migration. ... But do not demand that I accept deportees from the US handcuffed and arriving on military flights. We are not anyone's colony."

The easy offramps seem gone.
