The ducks/geese fly over and/or stop at farms with lots of chicken and spread the virus to the chickens.
The reason that you kill the chickens is two fold. One the virus is extremely contagious. So once a chicken gets sick it’s likely the others will also. Which brings me to the 2nd reason.
