Enfant terrible of Canadian publishing. Rabble rousing at the intersection of Canadian politics, economics, and culture.
Depends on the propaganda goals of the speaker. However, once we establish the Canadianess of a book, we usually stop asking any questions about the economic conditions that produced it, opting to bask in superficial nationalism instead. Maj reason why industry is FUBAR.

It's the contemporary equivalent to "Whatsamatta for you? He-ah make-ah da trains-ah, how you say, run on the time!"

A boycott should include books. Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, and Penguin Random House should be sanctioned right out of the #canlit market.

We can't afford to place our culture in the hands of US investment corps like Blackrock/Vanguard, and a German fam with prev fascist sympathies.

We need a new industrial policy. Not more funds thrown into the abyss of a dysfunctional status quo. Marsha's piece doesn't offer any insight into solutions other than maybe throwing $ at a broken system. Too bad nobody actually reads the Massey Report. There are some good ideas in it.

Also, there's a whack of authors who also know how various publishing tasks go. There's no real need for a publisher as a capitalist operator of a press at this stage of development, especially for indie presses who have capitalist structures without any capital. Results of this are dysfunctional.

I can imagine an author-owned cooperative paying a higher royalty. 20% might not be plausible, but such a structure would eliminate the built in conflict between pubs who want to pay lower royalties and authors who want higher. I would love to design a pub bus model for an author coop!

A great example of the success that happens when cultural funding goes to BIPOC led, grassroots organizations. This is a much better approach than giving money to reluctant yt publishers and fest dirs and hoping they'll try to be representative of the whole country.

I agree. A diversity of tactics, strategies, and alliances will be needed to resist fascism across the Global North.

I don't have confidence in liberal parties to act as an anti-fash bulwark. Historically, they've been wishy washy at best, complicit at worst when it comes to fascism. Hence the old leftist adage "scratch a liberal and a fascist bleeds". Hope to be proven wrong on this re US and Can!
