If you need cheering, watch The Detectorists on Acorn TV. Written and directed by Mackenzie Crook, it is a great, funny, easy-going show.

My New Year’s Eve watching is done. “When Harry Met Sally,” “Holiday” ( 1938 movie with Katherine Hepburn and a tmbling Cary Grant), and “Dinner for One” (an old English short adopted by Germans and other countries as traditional New Year’s Eve fare). Then champagne in my Venetian wine goblet.

I have been off for many months (in case I had any followers left) because I needed help off social media for a while. But I am now retired and enjoying it in Boquete, Panama.

wake up nerds, new JWST image!
‼️ New #jwst image alert ‼️ This gorgeous new view of the Sombrero galaxy shows that unlike in the visible-light images, the brightly glowing core of the galaxy doesn't shine, but we see instead a smooth inner disk, & we can see new details of the outer ring. More: science.nasa.gov/missions/web...

She’s great.
Sarah McBride: "It is an attempt to distract ... Every single time we hear them say the word 'trans,' look what they're doing with their right hand. Look at what they're doing to pick the pocket of American workers, to fleece seniors by privatizing Social Security and Medicare."

If you are crossing the street during a parade, leave some space between you and the people marching, even if they are at parade rest. I saw very people respecting the space of the marchers.

Serious question: are these comfortable for marching in a 2 hour parade?

According to my iPad I have reached my goal of reading 3 books this year. I have no ideas where that goal came from. Plus, I need to find a way to inform my iPad that I do most of my reading with physical books. Unfortunately my physical books are still in transit from Japan to Panama.

Don’t know clear (pun not intended) this is, but appropriately “When the Fog Rolls In” by Train is playing on random.

I’m in Panama and so happy that I am not in Cleveland. How do the players, and officials, see the ball?

Last Mongolian barbecue meal at the Yokosuka CPO Club. One of my favorite meals at one of my favorite places on base.

From WaPo follow-up to the debate (4 takeaways) “Trump also got into relatively little detail about his own policies, apart from repeatedly pointing to his plan for tariffs (which co-moderator David Muir of ABC News unhelpfully noted could lead to costs rising on consumers).” Just WTF.

Books I love but can’t read again:

The Road
(Won’t watch the movies for the same reason)

Retirement goodbyes thought: no matter age, position, role, job, or place in life: always be kind and respectful until other person proves unworthiness. End result will be outpouring of genuine best wishes and appreciation , leading to personal humility and knowing you did it right.

Star Wars science question which has always bothered me: ships coming out of hyperspace to a sudden stop—looks cool but what about the physics? Why aren’t people liquefied as the get slammed into the nearest solid object?

Rewatching Rogue One after finally watching Andor. Question I have had before—what is the armor for stormtroopers made of? If a blind guy with a staff can take them done, what is the point of the armor?

Still don’t know why Fluke is my most Re-read book by Moore, but it definitely is. And I do love all his books (even came in second on a contest because I didn’t trust my instincts on one question).

Re-reading Skinny Dip by Carl Hiaasen, and a passage about marine biology transports me to my most re-read book by @theauthorguy, Fluke. So, of course, that is going to be the additional book I am adding to my “currently reading” list (bedroom space in my small massage chair just before bedtime). 🧵

Still early on in Skinny Dip by Carl Hiaasen—protagonist picks up “two apples and a ripe banana” for breakfast after sneaking a look at her rescuer. Yes, my mind went there.
September 6, 2024 at 9:17 AM
I have read most, if not all, of Carl Hiaasen’s books, and if Key West wasn’t in Florida (DeSantis territory) I would love to retire there.

Nice little thunderstorm here in YokosukaJapan. I really miss the ones we got in the high plains area of SExNew Mexico. Those were magnificent. Especially the lightning storms. My most memorable was when outside Santa Fe when the lightning in the clouds was spectacular.

Serious question about the right’s issue with trans people (and I haven’t lived in the US in over 20 years). I know trans teens and young adults because it came up with pronouns. No biggie. What kind of radar does the right have to identify trans people? I can’t tell by sight. So why be offended?
