Another mass coral bleaching and mortality event is unfolding across 500km of the northern Great Barrier Reef.

Silence from reef agencies.

Ginkgo biloba 1. Light rain today was enough to send some of the amber fishtail leaves of this Ginkgo falling, so it needed a quick photo before they all fell. I just love the absolute antiquity of the species and the wierdness of it being a broadleaf conifer.

Fact-check: Scooping up a few bucketfulls of coral sperm, eggs or larvae is not "IVF".

The scale (2x2m) is ridiculously small compared to the 344,000sq km area of the Great Barrier Reef.

Novel? No. It was first trialled in Japan in 2005: link.springer.com/content/pdf/...

A tweet below from 2016, with a million views.

Since then, mass bleaching and mortality of corals on the GBR has occurred again in 2017, 2020, 2022 & 2024.

5 times in 8 years.

"I showed the results of aerial surveys of #bleaching on the #GreatBarrierReef to my students, And then we wept."

The reality-check finally appears in the 10th paragraph -

“Some scientists have argued that investing in reef restoration is like putting a gilded Band-Aid on a patient in cardiac arrest”.
