Maybe it's being repurposed as a Collection/Offering Plate? Piled high with unsavory things sacrificed to the profane deity and encrusted with wax from drippy candles?

Use this one for a lot of things! Even giving the PCs a few rolls on it for "What's in their Pockets?" is pretty fun, because they often try to find a use or "reason" for having it with them 😅

We loved this room so much back in the day! It was a massive time waster as you mention, but Curious Players are always going to want to open every last one to see what's inside. A few ended up being used as Tools later in the Dungeon sometimes to solve problems, so not a *total waste*

We loved this room so much back in the day! It was a massive time waster as you mention, but Curious Players are always going to want to open every last one to see what's inside. A few ended up being used as Tools later in the Dungeon sometimes to solve problems, so not a *total waste*

Definitely not OSR/NSR, but Tunnels & Trolls way back when handled Combat in this way: Just a side-based Roll-Off + adds really. Interestingly, it put the focus on *translating* the dice to "What Happened" rather than letting the dice dictate things iteratively.

I'd probably reduce Damage (half or Disadvantage) but run it relatively normally if the Character's have Training. Of course, critical failures could introduce something like one of these:

Since I mainly work in tables, getting things to that "Short" state is something I often have to slide into :)

Most of the Tables I ended up doing at certain stages were just "eavesdroppers." I'd over hear a conversation between other Players and end up with a small "Slice of Life" d10 Table Topic from that. It really was startling how much minutia was generated.

I really wish I would have been able to spend more time in the Apiary! Would have made the conclave a lot more tricky though!

I love stumbling on things with that kind of embellishment in them! We weren't afraid at all to color/write in these back in the day: Much more like Cookbooks, where the stains/spills represent that it was *being used* than anything precious or collectable!
