As long as it goes hand-in-hand with making magistrates’ courts ‘courts of record‘ ie the evidence presented and arguments made are put on record, I think it would be fine to reduce appeals. But if that *doesn‘t* happen, I think it’s a big problem — and it may be harder to do than gov thinks.

Definitions of academic freedom often state that it doesn't include illegal speech, I think that's the relevance. If his speech is not illegal then it's covered by academic freedom.

Hard work, lack of freedom or control, uncertainty about when it ends, dependence on the 'guards' for safety and wellbeing, competitive survival with peers. Plus you chose to be there!

Always remember a fellow PhD student, back in 2000's, telling me about research that suggested the most comparable trauma to doing a PhD was being a prisoner of war. Don't have a reference, but it really struck me. I know it sounds like hyperbole, but...

I fell into a Dorothy Thompson hole this weekend and her article (1941) on who goes “MAGA” is worth a revisit.

Stephen Miller believes that if he supercharges the debate over Trump's abuses of power with enough propaganda, he can polarize it and force low-info voters to embrace authoritarianism. Pritzker/Newsom have accepted that this requires an information war in response.

And the part that gets ignored is the impact of the police total failure and refusal to recognise the victims as victims.

I think part of it also that a lot of decently paid jobs are also really hard work. They're stressful, or boring, and always time consuming. At some point, people stopped seeing being paid as the reward for doing stuff that isn't fun. 'Do what you love' is most of the time not going to cut it.

Doesn't this assume that Trump is asking them to do something they don't want to do?

Do you think social media should shape mainstream news agendas and the positioning of political parties?

What decisions are being made, and by who, that result in social media shaping mainstream news agendas and the positioning of political parties?
