Baltic Finnic 40+ male. A liberal to conservatives, a conservative to liberals, i.e. a centrist. Here for rallying, politics, history. I speak 🇪🇪🇫🇮🇬🇧

Views:
- Si vis pacem, para bellum. ⚔️
- Europe should federalise. 🇪🇺
I maintain that Estonia is a Finnic state, not a Baltic state.

Estonia seems to the most wolfed country in Europe which is sometimes problematic to be fair but also cool.

More cool than problematic.

I think most people agree that Lithuania should be larger than Muscovy, as in 1450.

Both names almost certainly come from the name Rävala, which was what the area around (what is now)Tallinn was called before the pivotal 13th century.

We've been tempted to steal it back ourselves. I'd quite like that actually.

What I appreciate about Trump is that we know he writes his own social media posts. Because no one on his staff is that stupid.

A fundamental problem with news is that it's mostly bad news. All the bad news from around the world delivered into your life every day.

Consuming the news, it's easy to develop the view that the world is an endless sea of troubles while actually it's rather lovely. People hug far more than stab.

We recently had an unpleasant case, as you know, that started with an "expert" saying the name "eestlased" comes from the Germans. Said "expert" made such ridiculous mistakes at a rate of about once a month -- whenever her topic required some understanding of history. Yeah, ChatGPT is more reliable.

Ecosia... There's your problem. Not gonna get such mistakes with ChatGPT. 😎

In his ethnography called "Germania" (98 AD), the Roman historian Tacitus writes about the Aestii and Fenni.

The Aestii are described as a people with similar customs as the Germans. They collect amber from the Baltic Sea, and speak a language similar to that of the Celtic Britons.

Uralic languages used to be spoken throughout Northern Eurasia. Things went bad when Slavs expanded to the North from their heartland about 1500 years ago. Things went really bad when Muscovy began their rapid expansion about 500 years ago. Now, most Uralic languages are on their way to extinction.

Looking at a European genetic composition map, I'm surprised to note that Latvians and especially Lithuanians have a larger Uralo-Finnic component than Estonians.

Also that Lithuanians, Latvians, and Estonians are genetically more similar to the russified people in the East than with the Finns.
