There are neuro studies demonstrating that people make decisions before they create explanations for those decisions. (And they have no idea they do that.)
It's a really tough problem. It means all answers about why someone voted a particular way, even if they believe & seem sincere, are suspect.

Two Oregon high school teachers charged on Tuesday with sexually abusing students had been reported as early as 2019 to district officials, who failed to notify the authorities, according to the police.
