Musicologist. Cat fan, carb connoisseur. Give me all the wry humor and cat pictures you can to get me through this clown-tastic clam-maldity.
We need to keep encouraging those with power in higher ed to stand firm at a moment where it otherwise becomes risk assessment. The NYT op-ed today hit it home with the conclusion that universities need to let business be secondary. It is harder for fascists to crack when education is the goal.

Called my rep today about it and to remind him that even in his (currently) very red district, we benefit from arts and the humanities.

This is my 1500 word version of my book that’s coming out this fall: www.worldmusictextbook.org/chapters/nie...
Any musicologists seeing this, hit us up! We will even compensate you while we still have some grant funds dedicated to free educational resources!

It can also be linked with combatting textbook costs. I’ve been working with two other academics to create “mini articles” capped at 1500 to 2000 words to boil down musicology research for undergrads and the public. www.worldmusictextbook.org

Musicologist here: I strongly recommend watching the documentary “Amandla” about the role of music in the battle against apartheid in South Africa. Music and protest have a very long history. Also look up the “Singing Revolution” in Estonia. I could go on.

I am so sorry. I know it is a drop in the ocean, but I called my goon of a rep (Lance Gooden) about it yesterday. I keep reminding myself that they are targeting us in the humanities exactly because what we do is powerful and therefore a threat to them.

What in the goobeligook is a “discriminatory equity ideology”? None of it makes any linguistic sense, though it all means white male supremacy.

Left my comments on all three, though they may be a bit of a salty vent. If republicans want to protect women, how about funding rape kits and support against domestic violence? The false premise of “protecting women” is so incredibly galling.

And a hearty amount of normalcy bias on top of that.

Teaching in the south, I have increasingly make that same argument that including diverse voices isn’t just a moral question, but a rational choice backed by data to produce innovative work.

I teach a class that is the “musics of the world,” and I have often assigned this podcast on creativity that makes a similar point. www.npr.org/2018/07/02/6...
The Edge Effect
There is great comfort in the familiar. It's one reason humans often flock to other people who share the same interests, laugh at the same jokes, hold the same political views. But familiar ground may...

I am having trouble getting the app to work. I uninstalled and reinstalled the updated one. Any ideas? iOS 18.1.1.
