Post from @NickyFrank30 My grandfather used to say “and Magda Goebbels made a great strudel” and | never knew what it meant until after he died my grandmother explained some magazine did a fluff interview with Magda Goebbels a few years before WW2 that included her strudel recipe and my grandfather, who hated the Nazis with the passion of 10,000 suns, thought it was an example of the media sanitizing evil people and he would use the phrase when someone asked him to overlook a bad person doing bad things and focus on the good.

I'll be turning 95 this Monday. In my younger years I was often filled with worry, that I wasn't quite good enough, that no one would cast me again, that I wouldn't live up to my mother's hopes. But these days begin in peace, and end in gratitude. My life didn't quite take shape until my 40s. I had worked steadily — on provincial stages, in radio plays, in West End productions — but I often felt adrift, as though I was searching for a home within myself that I hadn't quite found. At 50 I accepted a role that many would later associate me with Hyacinth Bucket, of Keeping Up Appearances. I thought it would be a small part in a little series. I never imagined that it would take me into people's living rooms and hearts around the world. And truthfully, that role taught me to accept my own quirks. It healed something in me. At 60 I began learning Italian so I could sing opera in its native language. I also learned how to live alone without feeling lonely. I read poetry aloud each evening, not to perfect my diction, but to quiet my soul. At 70 I returned to the Shakespearean stage. But this time, I had nothing to prove. I stood on those boards with stillness, and audiences felt that. I was no longer performing. I was simply being. At 80 I took up watercolor painting. I painted flowers from my garden, old hats from my youth, and faces I remembered from the London Underground. Each painting was a quiet memory made visible. Now at 95 I write letters by hand. I'm learning to bake rye bread. I still breathe deeply every morning. I still adore laughter though I no longer try to make anyone laugh. I love the quiet more than ever. I'm writing this to tell you something simple: Growing older is not the closing act. It can be the most exquisite chapter if you let yourself bloom again. Let these years ahead be your treasure years. You don't need to be famous or flawless. You only need to show up fully for the life that's still yours. love & gentleness, Patricia Routledge

So I bought a Skimmia japonica subsp. reevesiana (self fertile) a few months back, have not found the right spot for it. Planning to "pot it on" but any advice gratefully received.
A skimmia japonica subsp reevesiana. A compact, evergreen shrub with slightly aromatic, leathery green leaves. The red berries it came with have changed colour but are still on the plant.

The Commissioner is concerned about the current climate for trans people. Although they constitute a very small proportion of the population, and face acute marginalisation across all areas of life, trans people have been subject to intense political and public debate and scrutiny, including in the wake of the Supreme Court's judgment in For Women Scotland Ltd. v. The Scottish Ministers. He observes a tendency to see the human rights of different groups as a zero-sum game, when in reality any tensions will likely be exceptional; nuanced, reasonable and balanced accommodations can be found. He deplores that discussions tend towards the exclusion of trans people from many aspects of society, rather than ensuring that their inclusion and dignity are upheld. The Commissioner reiterates that all relevant legal or policy developments must be human rights-compliant, including in view of the case law of the European Court of Human Rights and other international instruments.

When first approached by the FT regarding its role in the project, a TBI spokesperson. said: "Your story is categorically wrong... TBI was not involved in the preparation of the deck, which was a BCG deck, and had no input whatever into its contents." The FT then provided details of a 12-person message group used for the project — including two TBI staff, BCG consultants and the Israeli businessmen — and an unpublished TBI document shared within the group titled “Gaza Economic Blueprint”. At this point, the TBI spokesperson said: "We have never said TBI knew nothing about what this group was working on or that they weren't on calls in which the group discussed their plans."

Why are these people so ridiculous?

In a pointed address to the cabinet on Tuesday morning, the prime minister said he "will not countenance" criticism of Morgan McSweeney, the Downing Street chief of staff who has borne the brunt of criticism for a backbench rebellion on welfare reforms.
