It was one of those days where I felt great admiration for ppl trying to stop HIV in a part of the world that doesn’t even have paved streets, privilege about my own position, & anger at Trump, Musk & the US for harming these kind souls who have so little and are just trying to help their neighbors

"As a member of the Jewish-Arab leftist Hadash Faction in the Israeli Parliament, I would like to congratulate Zohran Mamdani for his remarkable victory in yesterday’s election.

From New York to the Middle East, may there be peace, justice and equality for all!" - Ofer Cassif, Jewish Communist MK.

Hanan Ashrawi, chairwoman of the board of trustees at Birzeit University in the West Bank and a former official for the Palestine Liberation Organization, called Mr. Mamdani’s victory “a wake-up call to the U.S. and the world, especially to the Democrats who worked against their own progressives.”

It also seems like a missed opportunity to let a bunch of ignorant racists have a monopoly on the promotion of and pride in Persianate culture and create this rather artificial divide between Islam and the Persianate world. They go together!

One eastward-looking missed opportunity I think Iran had could have been some kind of Iranic/Nowruz/Persian-speaking alliance, especially post-USSR, in Central Asia. I know Ahmadinejad sort of tried but it seemed always second fiddle to looking west. Hope it’s renewed. Gotta start somewhere.

I think instincts like this arise from a form of pessimism that our interlocutors in a diverse society will never accept us on our own terms, and so we must join with them to locate and find another even more hated minority. This is self-defeating and we should all reject this logic.

At the same time, this should be a cautionary tale for Muslims in the US curious about Fuentes and co. There are Muslims looking to make a similar bargain, like those who joined as plaintiffs in Mahmoud. It’s not going to work!

I help my family with their ballots every year (or as they say, I tell them the “answers”) and I was SO relieved at the one question!! I didn’t realize how complicated CA ballots are until leaving!

And it wasn’t just college kids either.

But I really don’t think people realized every single one of those college kids they were demonizing was someone’s precious child.
Taking a position that alienates the Black churches, labor unions, and youth, the actual base of your party, is again not a tenable place for a political opposition.

Democrats keep pretending like nothing has happened since 10/8/23. Their base has no such pretensions.

It's really under discussed just how aligned the Israeli and Emirati lobbies are.

Still, the suffering of the Sudanese people is on a whole other level. The indifference isn’t owned by the West alone; it’s shared by those closest too. Arabs watch Africans burn and feel nothing, just as others once shrugged as Syrians fought the flames. It’s not geography. It’s hierarchy.
