I think it is safe to say, I like polenta cakes. It barely made a dent in my plum stash though… so that’s what the jam project will be for.

Between Hank Green taking about the evolutionary hurdles overcome by fish to form land-based fish, Spooky Lake Month, and Sam Reich being inspired by Homestar Runner, I Want to Believe (in the Weird Internet).

Tonight, I salute the past me that froze portions of black beans and mole sauce, so that we could have mole chicken on rice with roast Italian peppers and red kuri squash. I also salute my brother who gifted us Lizano sauce he picked up in Costa Rica and now we have a new flavour to play with.

First time making ratatouille. With fresh tomatoes, the prettiest striped eggplant and some other leftover veg odds and sods, and even with no fresh herbs, this worked out very nicely. (And the chicken liver in the sauce? Well, nutritional needs also nicely met.)

The Street and Traffic By-Law is pretty clear: a vehicle is not to be parked within 5m of either side of a crosswalk.

Even though a lane intersection does not count as a crosswalk, taller vehicles parked by lanes / alleys affect (speeding) cars’ sightlines into cyclists in the travel lane too. 2/5

I’m getting fed up and need to vent here.

Drivers regularly park their vehicles in my neighbourhood in ways that jeopardize vulnerable road users. Combined with people who routinely shortcut on residential streets while speeding, this is a recipe for tragedy. 1/5

Continuing these theme with potato rösti, tomatoes, rainbow chard and patty pan squash from the CSA box, paired with IKEA pickled herring in mustard (no assembly required). Cameo appearance by some tiny shallots from the winter I stuck in some dirt on my balcony for the summer. (And applesauce.)

Here’s a data point: the 2023 Tour De Cure for PM2.5 was in the red when they officially called their ride off, and the participants I was following in CAN99 facemasks. My screen cap of the AirMap was in my memories a couple days ago.

These spiralized (aka rotato cut) golden beets we stuck on our sablefish tacos are 🌀mesmerizing 🌀.

The “tough to germinate” thing was my experience too. Here’s my shiso in my aeroponic setup.

Kicking off birthday month with homemade citrus gin cured salmon on old bay spiced kale hash. Highly unphotogenic but delicious.

CSA gave us apricots, so… we made semolina cake. (In hindsight, using skyr instead of Greek yogurt made it a touch dry.)

Vancouver, brace yourself.

Another culinary milestone: my first time working with salmon spoon meat. (Which is to say, I scraped it off the bones myself…)

Lemongrass salmon patties with side salad of endive and peppers (and hot sauce). Because I am hot and exhausted. Surprisingly tasty. I even have a portion for tomorrow.

Not taking the cooler weather for granted. Used CSA potatoes and zucchini on a focaccia to eat for the week. (Not sure I have fully internalized how to do the dimpling.)

UPDATE: it actually turned out pretty bad. Once the power shut off at 7pm, and there was no fan to move the air around, there was also 8 measly km’s of wind at YVR and my apartment’s temperature dropped ***0.1C*** in 7 hours — until 2am, when 15min of fan time dropped it ***3C***.

I had much the same thought earlier! To use up expiring milk and sooo much chard and garlic scapes, incidentally.

I’m actually starting to kick myself for not kicking up a bigger fuss for delaying this PLANNED power outage work (from 7pm -5am) to a less sweltering day. Feeling nervous for the seniors on my floor for tonight. It’s not even 4pm and my apartment is way hotter than it got at its peak last night.

Sometimes dinner is a ridiculous pizza, half delicious and half fridge cleaning.

Morel mushrooms and spiny scallops with garlic scapes and cherry tomatoes on rosé sauce. A bit of nice return to form, after a couple of disappointing pie mishaps over the weekend.

I concur & felt pretty weird about that. I eat for nutrient density so I would have been all over ham hock and collard greens, for example, and all the seafood stuff except fish sticks were enthusiastic thumbs up from me.

But I also eat a lot of offal and it’s considered lower class. So… 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is only the second time I’ve cooked morel mushrooms! We did them up with shallots, asparagus and garlic scapes, in a black garlic ricotta sauce on penne.

We’ll be getting morels again next week. Time to plot.

I have made some version of this seaweed soba salad to mark the start of summer for going over ten years now. This is this year’s (regardless of the Juneuary vibes).

This year’s big change is smoked albacore tuna (from Skipper Otto). See the alt text for a list of ingredients.

I am noticing that _most_ stations seem to split the list of bikes up into electric and manual; and some select stations don’t have that for some reason. I can see how that would be a pain! Something tells me this is a powered vs non-powered dock setup.
