Went out to a CBC today mostly because the President of the bird club was leading it and I needed his signature electronically, and ended up with three rarities nearby afterwards. At least two of these are legit; waiting for ZZ Top to confirm the Cackling Geese. #birding

I would have liked to keep an open mind about TAE or fusion power in general, but I think this business deal tips the balance towards fusion power being a con.

I was fixing to add Canvasback to my December county bird list today, but yesterday I learned that constructions on the Beltway were mostly done, so it's way less painful to cross the river now. There's a place across the river that has Horned Lark with a […]

Gravy the Cat is at 18 months since his cancer treatment. His oncologist couldn't have been happier. He also said, "he has reserves" when asked about Gravy's weight (I decided to just feed him since his bout of diarrhea after coming back from kitty hotel back in September)

A Chinese dissident filmed Uyghur detention sites and then released the video on YouTube after fleeing China. He sought asylum in the US. Now the Trump admin wants to deport him to a country with strong ties to China.

My teacher told me to get to my violin jury early, but I forgot how early. I got a "studio" to practice in for 3 hours. I was able to do my ADHD style of practice, and even played a bit of piano.

It did get dicey near the end, when the room got so hot that my pegs started to slip.

The lead guy for my deck project showed up at a little before 7 am because the inspector showed up before 8 am last time and nobody was here. They grumbled and told different stories, but rescheduled and made sure this time they don't miss the inspection🤞

I'm scheduled to do a Christmas Bird Count at Ticksville tomorrow. We are planning to start at 7 am to catch the Northern Harrier. It's looking like snow overnight then sunny but with wind chill in the teens. I have some doubts about the harrier, but there will be no ticks! #birding

On ice this morning Brother Aleem was running his program when I heard a huge crash. I turned around to see him on the ice with blood pouring from his face. We had to order him to keep the pressure on it. By the time the ambulance showed up the bleeding had mostly stopped; he cut himself near […]

Finally got my Peregrine Falcon today. It was just perched there. Saw the front and back. The rangers on the bird walk were surprised that it was a lifer for me. Yeah, I really want to get a good look when it's a lifer, and today it finally happened. #birding

Listening to the tape of my youth: an unknown* pianist playing Liszt's Rhapsodie Espagnole. On the other side, a few of Liszt's Transcendental Etudes, also unknown artist**

* I didn't know enough to note the artist back then!
** There may still be a record somewhere?

Went to a spot I haven't been for a while, not because of the Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Tennessee Warbler, and Red-breasted Merganser sightings, but because of Orange-crowned Warbler. Birder Ed was so disappointed that I wanted to see such a "common" bird. He showed me the spot. It was cold and […]

The Chinese grocery store was busy! Spouse and I each got a big box of food at the hot food bar for $12.99 each, then I did some grocery shopping -- picked up 2 15-lb bags of rice for $10.99 each.

The way the field "AI" exploded in the last 5-10 years inevitably leads to some low-quality work by researchers (such as they were) who will not withstand the test of time. That they would use AI to generate peer reviews -- showing utmost disrespect for the scientific method -- is almost […]
