Sometimes, my daughter says something and I'll think: you are the kindest sweetest smartest person on the planet and I don't know why, but I get to experience magic in this moment & for that, I am lucky. For that, good job mama for having the luck to grace the same world as this tiny fairy being.
You tell me, “good job, mama!” as I am doing something routine, changing your diaper or picking up your stuffed animals, and I stop, eyes tearing, at your soft sweet voice, telling me what I so desperately want to hear, want to be: a good mama. Tonight I will think of all the ways I am not doing a good job, mama, but maybe in this moment I am.

You laugh that high-pitched wild giggle, and I cannot regret anything, wish anything in my whole entire life away--it all a golden ribbon, tied to this moment of joy

Sometimes I miss what my life was like before: The long lazy Saturdays, the uninterrupted meals, the boredom, the days spooling blank and empty and mine to fill. But then I remember: Before, I never knew the sound of my daughter’s wild laughter, the feeling of her small sticky fingers seeking my hand, the delight on her face as she runs in that clumsy zigzag way to wrap her arms around my leg, the sweetness of watching her tiny chest rise and fall in sleep as she clutches her favorite teddy bear. And I think: It was more than a fair trade.

does this much love feel so painful because I am human, or in spite of being human?
sometimes I wonder if I will survive motherhood-- not because of the lack of sleep, or the bone-deep stress, or the havoc on my immune system, but because: sometimes when I look at my daughter, my heart shatters like glass into a million sand-grain pieces, of joy of adoration of awe, and I wonder how I, a mere human, can survive this much love

There’s a polar bear on the cover of my daughter’s favorite book. A penguin on her pajamas, a narwhal on her bathrobe. I sometimes wonder if she’ll look back on these childhood favorites fondly, distantly—remembering them like a nostalgic fable, a bygone quirk of childhood. The way I remember dial-up internet or pizza hut buffets or Toys “R” Us or mild fall days. Like: how silly, how delightful, that the earth once had polar bears.
