I did not expect orthopaedics to appear on hep-ex 😅

Indeed the observation of the Higgs boson was announced 37 years later, on July 4 2012. John Ellis was in the room. I don't know where Gaillard and Nanopoulos were at that time. /end

They ended the paper with a note of caution: Finding the Higgs boson will be hard.
November 7, 2025 at 8:42 AM
At that times the heaviest known particles were charm bound states, like the ψ(2S), at masses around 4 GeV. Everything above was "new particles", including the now well known b quark, and the W and Z bosons.
November 7, 2025 at 8:42 AM
At that time nobody knew what the mass of the Higgs boson would be. It could be anything. So they computed the possible decay modes and their rates depending on the Higgs mass.

They didn't dare going beyond a mass of 100 GeV.

On this day 50 years ago, John Ellis, Mary K. Gaillard and Dimitri Nanopoulos submitted the paper "A Phenomenological Profile of the Higgs Boson" which was first to tell experimentalists how to find the Higgs boson.

Nothing significant. It just goes in the same direction as the same ratio in B⁺ and B⁰ decays.
October 27, 2025 at 7:09 AM
🤔 CMS also measure R(J/ψ) on the high side. That's the ratio of Bc⁺→J/ψτν to
Bc⁺→J/ψμν. LHCb saw an excess compared to the Standard Model, now CMS has it too.

If football players were ranked like scientists, based on statistical data, this would be the ideal premier league team. No keeper, no defender.

In particular, the rate of B mesons to one tau lepton is higher than the prediction: the Standard Model predictions (the crosses) are outside of the red blob (the data). If that's the case for one tau, it should also be visible for two taus.
