Ah, ok. No, the army as a whole hadn't deployed for active duty for the better part of two decades. But of course a considerable part of the officer corps had, given the dual nature of the Danish-Norwegian force where officers could and frequently did move between regiments and institutions.

Also not entirely sure what you mean by "garrison army". Although Norwegian strategy vs Sweden was very much defensive, the mobiliseable field army was very much expected to maneuver and fight in the field, and it did in 1808-09.

Field Commander is fair.

The lack of funding is a major and recurring theme through the period, but that impacts all aspects of the army. Difficult to accept it as sole explanation when some parts of the army works well, while others not.

Norwegian army dispositions during the war aside, to what extent does Christian August share responsibility for the dire state of army logistics and supply system upon the outbreak of war in early 1808?

Given how difficult it can be to get Finnish officers to talk about Finland's military capabilities, I'm not convinced they haven't got some already...

It would be if the goal was just to put an end to smugling. But I suspect domestic messaging is just as important a motivation here. Trump desiring to bolster his strongman credentials.

Doesn't do anything for legality, obvs.

In 2020, Tom generously placed his entire catalog of lyrics and music (including revised versions and little-known and unpublished works) into the public domain at tomlehrersongs.com for free use by anyone and everyone. The site was supposed to go dark around December 31, 2024, but it is still up.

Asked in an interview in the 1970s or 1980s why he stopped writing satirical songs, Lehrer famously quipped, “Political satire became obsolete when Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize [in 1973].”

Well, Henry Kissinger finally died on November 29, 2023, at 100.

Tom was a prodigy who skipped grades to enter Harvard University as a freshman at 15. Below is the final stanza of “Dissertation on Education,” the poem he wrote and submitted around 1943 with his successful college application.

Drafted into the Army in 1955, Tom worked at the NSA for two years.
