Every scientist, long before they were a scientist, was a little kid who stood in front of a fish tank or stared up at the stars or turned over a rock to look at the bugs underneath and said “wow”. On the best days, working in science still feels like that.

doing niche research is so annoying when it comes to finding anything in the literature or being able to complain about it. no one wants to hear about my beef with a QToF

I just started using iNaturalist and you can really tell that summer tidepooling at #docktober made my observations go way up

Anemones!!
More anemones under black light! They have fluorescent proteins in their tentacles! You can also see some algae around them that are also emitting a beautiful red color!

I’m going to post some art I have in my sketchbook! I’m obsessed with tomatoes so I painted a bunch of these! I’ve been meaning to do more and combine them into one big print or make stickers! who knows

Pictures aren’t the best because it was getting dark but I had a good day at the docks today! I’m always trying to find an excuse to find some nudibranchs <3

This is one of the smallest nudibranchs I’ve ever seen! I like to go when the tide isn’t super low, sometimes it’s nice to focus on a small space, you notice a lot. This is a baby shaggy mouse!

I love that in this video you can see all the little barnacles waving their appendages! I think this is an Acanthadoris pilosa but if someone could confirm that ID I would really appreciate it!

I’m not sure if this is a juvenile mottled with an extra leg or a 6 rayed sea star. I love watching their tube feet carry them across the cobble!!!

I’m a big marine life nerd so sometimes people ask me how I ID things and I really don’t know how to answer because sometimes it’s vibes?

I want to see every nudibranch in the pacific northwest that can be found in the intertidal. I’m at about 23 species right now. I haven’t been seeing many new species recently, mainly just lots of repeats. If anyone has any suggestions on where to spot new ones please let me know!

Cute little plumose anemone reaching out its tentacles into the water. Anemones are one of my favorite animals, I like them a lot because they don’t seem like they should be an animal

This is the second ever leopard dorid I’ve seen and I was so excited by it. They are one of my all time favorite nudibranchs and invertebrates in general. I’m super excited for this next set of King tides!
