The "Marty Supreme" poster immediately reminded me of the "Die Hard With A Vengeance" poster.

No hate, but this is pretty steep for a set for hardback western-themed Superman comics.

Robert Redford was a terrific actor and activist, but he was also a great movie director. One of my favorite movies ever is this wonderful picture about the quiz show scandals of the 1950s. Seek it out. One of the finest movies of the 1990s.

June was the strongest of the year so far: from one of the most daring investigative reports in Latin America history, to an underrated dystopia from 1940, to a genre-and-gender-defying novel, Octavia Butler's masterclasses in short fiction and Mary Gauthier's part memoir, part songwriting book.

Things have gotten so scary out there I have decided to change into a tree. I have also changed my profile pic to reflect this. But at least I have aviator sunglasses, so I am a cool tree and, as sappy as it may be, these sunglasses are rooted in my individuality.

Writing a profile description with so few characters available is a challenge, but I am satisfied (for now) that my new description gives a better idea of who I am to the Bluesky folks who follow me or come across my profile.

My three favorite March reads: the gothic madness of intergenerational trauma and abuse that is "Wuthering Heights"; an evocative poetry collection that captures the Persian diaspora experience; and the collected strips from Olivia Jaimes' first year run of the legendary Nancy comics.

Movies watched in March, pt. 1. In this roundup: two Best Picture nominees (one of my favorites of the year and a biopic based on the life of one of my favorite artists), a 90s sex comedy, a 90s thriller classic and one of the most influential horror movies ever. Bilingual reviews in every pic.

A bunch of kids watched "Knives Out" and decided to make the Jacob Thrombey character their whole personality. You can see 20 of these Thrombey followers in that video with Sam Seder.

Both movies based on the story of the Roman Ninth Legion that vanished in northern Britain in 120. Unrelated productions released one year apart from each other, they accidentally work together as a duology.

"Hollywood Shuffle" depicts the struggles of African American actors whose only casting opportunities are limited to bit parts, subservient or criminal roles. Through a series of imagination sequences, movie tropes are spoofed while the real world scenes showcase lots of heart.

Feb Movies, pt. 2: (1/2) A double bill of Jack Hill movies that made Pam Grier a star. "Coffy" (1973) is a hard-edged vigilante film in which an uncompromising nurse goes undercover to bring down a drug trafficking network, discovering some nasty revelations about people around her.

Feb Movies, pt. 1: "It's What's Inside" is a very fun, very satisfying body swap story with a great use of film grammar and plenty of great character work; "Carry On" starts strong but ends up being merely serviceable; however Jason Bateman shows off his villain chops with gusto.

I am all for celebrating "Work Naked Day", but why does it have to be in the first week of February, why do I have to live in a place without heating and why do I have to live in somebody else's house? Not the best time or place to celebrate, but I am happy for all those who are able.

Some say our world is getting too small;
I say, with kindness
There's room for us all
Our world is always changing;
Every day's a surprise
Love can open your eyes
In our world.

Top 20 Music Albums of the Year: 1/20. "Prelude to Ecstasy" by The Last Dinner Party.

Brilliant, addictive operatic record that plays like the soundtrack to whatever inner turmoil you are going through.

Top 5 Tracks: The Feminine Urge, Sinner, Burn Alive, Portrait of a Dead Girl & Beautiful Boy. 🎵

Al Pacino's memoir became one of my favorite books of the year and one of the best memoirs I have read. This is as close as a conversation as prose can feel and it was so funny, heartwarming and self-effacing in ways I never would have expected. Pacino's humanity shines through every sentence 💙📚.

Recently Read: Margaret Millar's "Beast In View", a suspense novel with droll, pitch-black, precise prose & a story whose ending was so unexpected in a very pleasing way. The plotting and the writing demand an immediate second reading. Another astonishing selection by Sarah Weinman for LoA.

Going to tell my kids this is the only live-action adaptation of "Garfield".
(From "Chungking Express". Tony Leung Chiu-wai as the nameless Cop 633 who, for the purposes of this post, shall be named "Jon").

By coincidence, I read the prologue for the novelization of "Star Wars" on the 48th anniversary of its publication date. The description of Emperor Palpatine as conceived by Lucas at the time (before the changes he made to the character in the latter movies) were so startling as to merit sharing:
