One of the great privileges of my professional life was assisting Joe Nye with his seminal work on soft power. He taught me how to write a book from start to finish. His ideas are out of vogue in this White House, but their wisdom endures. He will be missed.

Last week I saw this in the break room of a municipal government office: snacks and drinks for sale through a self-serve kiosk. The reality of government work is low pay and no freebies in exchange for the opportunity to serve the public.

I had never given much thought to Handel’s Messiah, but this is great storytelling about an artistic collaboration. I also knew nothing about “the hyp,” though it sounds all too familiar in the 21st century.
