Also, just now noticed this was still an open question at the end of your piece -- yes, the entire plot of FFV centers around the 無, which is called the Void in most English translations. Not sure if ムーア is a reference to that. "Moore" dates back to JP strat guides, though, so not an artifact of loc

Thought #2: Rather than being derived directly from "dream" I wonder if ドリーン is simply a contraction of ドリストーン

The character 夢 can be read "yume" but also can be read as "mu," which is the most likely explanation -- no need to connect them via ドリーム or 無, as the reading is already baked into 夢.
I *imagine* ムーア could be a reference to 無 given what goes down there!

btw I don't know about your experience but I was enjoying using split Joy-Cons for this up until this star -- by the middle of the level it would consistently just go out of whack and Mario would just barrel off the side of the ledge. I ended up switching to a Pro controller and had no issues

Bumping this up because it's genuinely groundbreaking stuff and I don't know that it's reaching the audience that it should! I think this is one of the greatest video game stories of all time. My guests are rarely heard from and were extremely generous with their memories.
